Lilak (Purple Action for Indigenous Women’s Rights)
Lilak (Purple Action for Indigenous Women’s Rights) is an organisation of indige-
nous women leaders as well as feminists, anthropologists, human rights advo-
cates, environmentalists and lawyers who support the struggle for indigenous
women’s human rights. LILAK also does researches on the major issues affect-
ing indigenous women.
Lilak has also organized regional gatherings for more participation from local
communities, especially for the development of an Indigenous Women Agenda.
Lilak has also conducted learning sessions at the community level on issues that
are relevant for them such as the Magna Carta of Women, Indigenous Peoples
Rights Act, and other policies affecting their environment, livelihood and their
lives; and basic human rights discussions both as indigenous, as women and as
human rights defenders.
First organised in 2011, Lilak has been consistently contributing to the develop-
ment of the cause of indigenous women focusing on cultural empowerment,
economic empowerment, social empowerment, and political empowerment
through advocacy, leadership development, and movement building. Lilak has
partnered with indigenous women leaders in conducting policy dialogues with
key government agencies and international platforms on various issues such as
on environment, on health.
In 2015, the national gathering focused on the issues of reproductive health of
indigenous women, and their traditional birth practices. A national policy dia-
logue was held after this, to raise the issue of local government ordinances pe-
nalizing home births, which affect greatly the traditional practice of indigenous
The latest National Indigenous Women’s Gathering was held in July 24-27, 2017 in
Quezon City. It carried the theme “Our Stories, Our Struggle for Rights, for Justice”.
The NIWG 2017 has brought together more than 100 indigenous women from 31 indigenous
communities from all over the Philippines.
